#071: Let’s Make a Family Recycling Center!
|
|
|
OBJECTIVE:
- Make a family recycling center.
- Teach your child responsibility in the home.
- Teach your child about environmental stewardship.
- Streamline the way your family handles refuse and recyclable materials.
TIME: 3-4 hours
COST: $30-50
MATERIALS:
- Recycling containers
- Plastic recycling bags
- Large, adhesive labels
- Black marker
- Decorative stickers
LET’S GET GOING!
STEP 1: Pick Your Spot
To begin creating your home recycling center, you’ll need to designate space for your recycling center in your home. In which room will you put it? Do you want to put it in your kitchen? How about the basement? Next to your backdoor? This is an important initial decision. Talk with your child about where the best place in the home to situate your recycling center may be.
You will find that it is easier to get in the habit of recycling and make it part of your family’s routine if you make it convenient. Discuss with your child where in your house your recycling center may be most conveniently placed.
You should consider in which room most of the waste your family produces is created. Most likely this is your kitchen. You will also want to make it easy for you or your child to take the recycling materials out of the house.
Here are some of the rooms in which you can place your family recycling center:
1. Hallway: The space between your kitchen and backdoor, or between your kitchen and garage can be a convenient spot for a recycling center. Make sure that your hallway is wide enough to accommodate your containers. If your recycling center chokes the space in your hallway, you will need to find somewhere else to place it.
2. Kitchen: Consider where in your kitchen your recycling center can fit safely and cleanly. Is there a cabinet that can be emptied to accommodate your recycling center? How about an empty space along the wall? Determining the size of your containers will help you assign the right spot. Placing the recycling center in the kitchen is useful because many of the products and packaging that you will recycle will be created in this room.
3. Garage: The garage is ideal if you want to store your materials designated for recycling in large containers. It is also a location that makes it especially convenient for loading recycling materials into your vehicle. However, if you choose to store recycling materials in the garage, you may want to establish a smaller recycling center indoors for convenience.
4. Basement: Like the garage, your basement may have more space available for storing items to be recycled. However, you will have to navigate stairs in order to store and then remove recycled items. A basement location is less ideal than the other suggested locations within your home.
STEP 2: Choose Your Containers
The number, size and type of your recycling containers will depend on multiple factors. These are the questions you and your child should ask:
*How many categories of recycled materials will we need to accommodate?
*Does our town or area allow materials to be commingled? (i.e. can I mix plastic bottles and glass containers?).
*How much can my child and/or I lift?
*Where will we be storing our containers? Do they need to be small enough to fit in a cabinet?
*Do we want containers with secure lids?
*Can we use convert containers already in our home for use in the recycling center, or do we need to purchase new containers?
STEP 3: Outfit Your Recycling Center
You will need to be sure that everyone in your family can use the recycling center. That way, all your recycled materials will be placed in the right spot.
Here are some of the tasks you and your child will need to complete to outfit your recycling center:
1. Post Instructions: make sure that you post easy-to-understand instructions in close proximity to your recycling center. For instance, you might want to print out a list of all the common materials that will be placed in each container.
2. Create a Color Code: You and your child might want to create a color-coding system for your containers, so that it is very simple to keep your containers straight from one another. You want your child to succeed in place the correct items in the correct containers.
3. Label The Containers: You and your child might also make easy-to-read labels to place on each container. Again, simplifying the recycling process will help everyone in your family pitch in.
4. Make Containers Accessible: Can everyone in your family reach the recycling containers? Make sure the height of your recycling containers is adjusted for everyone in the family and be sure that the container lids are easy to remover and replace.
5. Decorate Your Containers: Your child might enjoy decorating the containers in your new family recycling center. You might provide your child with stickers or other fun decorations.
6. Make Your Recycling Center Easy To Clean: You and your child will need to clean your recycling center from time to time, to reduce or eliminate the possibility of insect and vermin infestation. Regularly cleaning your recycling center is part of caring for it on a long-term basis.
STEP 4: Make Recycling a Family Affair
Recycling should be a family affair. Here a few ways to make that become reality:
1. Explain The Rules: Everyone in your family should be aware of the rules of the recycling center, and how it works. Take special care to insure that your child or children understand the rules in particular, so that they can pitch in equally and take ownership in the family effort.
2. Assign Roles: You may do well to assign roles to each family member. Who will manage the recycled materials? Who will take the materials outside? Who will clean the recycling center? Will several people handle the work? Or just one person? These are the questions you will need to ask yourself.
3. Talk About Why Your Family Recycles: Make sure that your children understand how important it is to recycle, and the impact recycling can have on the environment. Help them understand that they are helping to take care of the planet by recycling, and that recycling is one small part of a life devoted to environmental stewardship.
More TIPS for Your Family Recycling Center
*Do you know what materials your town will and will not recycle? Contact your town to find out. Most communities allow newspapers, mixed paper, cardboard, glass and plastics, and aluminum and steel. However, each town has its own policies regarding recycling.
* Stay consistent and recycle materials right away. Store your materials for recycling in your recycling center containers, not in piles in other parts of yourself. Be sure to use the recycling center that you and your child have created.
* Take special care of items like used batteries and printer cartridges. Items such as these are not usually recycled with standard materials, but should not be thrown out in the trash. Create a space to save these materials, and identify stores in your area that will recycle them for you. For instance, Staples stores will recycle your printer cartridges for you.
* Dry cleaners will usually recycle wire hangers, so don’t throw those out with the trash either.
* You can actually make money with certain recyclable materials. Some recycling centers will pay you cash for aluminum cans and plastic bottles.
* Rather than toss old items out, see if you can donate things like games, toys, clothes and furniture your family no longer wants. There might be someone out there that would love to have your trash!
